Why Every Part of Our Retreat Has a Purpose
Updated: Aug 11
How careful preparation, expert guidance and thoughtful integration come together to create lasting transformation.

"We've never designed our retreats around activities. We've always designed them around one question: What do people need at each stage of their journey to feel safe enough for lasting transformation?"
— Niels van der Valk
The Ceremony Is Only One Part of the Journey
When people first discover psilocybin retreats, it's natural to focus on the ceremony itself.
After all, that's often what receives the most attention.
But through our own experiences, years of training and supporting hundreds of participants, we've come to believe something different.
Meaningful transformation rarely comes from one extraordinary moment. It happens because every stage of the journey prepares you for the next.
We see a retreat as one carefully designed journey.
From the first intake form to the integration call weeks after the retreat, every stage has been intentionally designed to prepare you for what comes next. Rather than feeling like a series of separate activities, the experience unfolds as one continuous flow, creating the conditions for profound and lasting transformation.
None of it is accidental. Every step serves a purpose.
Looking back at my own retreat, I realised it wasn't one exercise or one ceremony that changed my life. It was the combination of everything. That insight became one of the foundations of Elevated Mind Retreats, and today every part of our retreats is intentionally designed to help participants feel safe, supported and able to fully engage with their own journey. I share more about that journey in Why I Founded Elevated Mind Retreats.
It Begins Long Before You Arrive
Many people assume the retreat begins when they arrive at our venue.
In reality, it begins weeks earlier.
Transformation doesn't happen by chance. It begins with feeling understood, knowing what to expect and gradually preparing yourself for the journey ahead.
That's why our preparation process is just as important as the retreat itself.

Understanding the Person Behind the Participant
The first step is a comprehensive online intake form, but for us it is far more than an administrative requirement. It allows us to assess whether a retreat is appropriate for you, understand your medical history, current health, medications, previous psychedelic experience and, perhaps most importantly, begin understanding the person behind the application.
Safety always comes first. Occasionally we recommend postponing participation or advise that a retreat is not the right next step. While that can be disappointing, we believe careful screening is one of the most important responsibilities we have as facilitators. A meaningful journey starts by making sure it's the right journey for you.
Once you're accepted, our relationship truly begins. During the personal intake call, we explore your motivations, discuss your intentions, explain how the retreat unfolds and answer any questions you may have. We also introduce the first preparation exercises, inviting you to begin reflecting on the beliefs, patterns and intentions you wish to explore. → Psilocybin Retreat Safety: What You Should Know
By the time you arrive, we've already begun building something that cannot be rushed: trust.
Your Preparation Journey
Around two weeks before the retreat, we send every participant a comprehensive preparation package.
This includes our 17-page Participant Guide, practical travel information, a packing list, dietary recommendations and exercises to help you reflect on your intentions and recognise emotional triggers that may arise during the retreat.
Many of the exercises build on the principles we discuss in How to Prepare for a Psilocybin Retreat.
At the same time, we create a dedicated WhatsApp group. While it certainly helps with practical questions and arranging shared travel, something more important begins to happen. Participants realise they are not embarking on this journey alone. By the time everyone arrives, many already feel a sense of connection, making it easier to settle into the retreat from the very first evening.
Although the retreat hasn't officially begun, the journey already has.
Why the Retreat Unfolds as One Continuous Journey
By the time you arrive, you've already spent weeks preparing.
You've reflected on your intentions, begun exploring your inner landscape and started building trust with the facilitators guiding your journey.
The retreat builds naturally on that foundation.
Rather than following a rigid schedule, the weekend has been designed to unfold organically, allowing each experience to prepare participants for what comes next.
Every facilitator on our team has walked their own path of personal growth. We've experienced the challenges of letting go, the discomfort of facing difficult emotions and the importance of feeling genuinely supported throughout the process.
Our programme isn't built solely on research or training. It's shaped by lived experience, refined through years of guiding hundreds of participants and continuously evolving as we learn from every retreat we facilitate together.
That shared experience influences every decision we make, from the pace of the weekend to the exercises we choose and the way we support participants throughout their journey.
Rather than moving from one isolated activity to the next, every experience has been carefully placed to prepare you for what follows.
As the weekend unfolds, trust deepens. Conversations become more open. Time in nature creates space for reflection. Breathwork helps participants become more present and begin letting go of the tension and emotional patterns they may have been carrying for years.
Music, silence and carefully guided exercises each play their own role, gently supporting the emotional journey without forcing or directing it.
Only when the group feels settled, connected and ready do we move towards the psilocybin ceremony.
By then, the ceremony no longer feels like the beginning of the retreat.
It feels like the natural next step.
Looking back, many participants tell us that the weekend didn't feel like a programme of separate activities.
It felt like one continuous journey, where each experience quietly prepared them for the next.
That is exactly how we designed it.

The Journey Continues After You Go Home
For many people, the ceremony feels like the destination.
The ceremony often provides new perspectives, emotional breakthroughs or profound insights. But insights alone rarely change a life.
Real transformation happens when those insights begin to influence the way you think, feel and live long after the retreat has ended.
That's why our support continues after you return home.
Every participant receives the music used during the retreat, practical breathwork techniques they can continue using, and our comprehensive 25-page Integration Guide. You can also learn more about psilocybin integration and how to turn insights into lasting change.
Around two to three weeks later, we meet again online for a group integration session.
This gives participants the opportunity to reflect on their experience, ask questions, share how they're doing and reconnect with the group that shared the journey together.
For many, it's reassuring to realise that the retreat hasn't simply ended.
The support continues.

The Elevated Mind Reset Method
One of the ways we help participants create lasting change is through our Elevated Mind Reset Method.
Through our own journeys and years of guiding participants, we repeatedly noticed the same pattern. Although every story is different, many struggles are rooted in deeply held beliefs that quietly shape how people see themselves and the world around them.
These beliefs often sound familiar:
"I'm not good enough."
"I always have to be strong."
"I'm responsible for everyone else."
A retreat can bring these patterns into awareness, but awareness alone doesn't necessarily create lasting change.
That's why we developed the Elevated Mind Reset Method. It combines two stages before the retreat with two stages afterwards, helping participants first recognise the beliefs that may no longer serve them and then consciously begin replacing them with healthier, more empowering ways of thinking.
Not everyone chooses to continue this work beyond the retreat, but for those who do, it often becomes one of the most meaningful parts of their journey. It also forms the foundation of our extended integration programme for participants who wish to continue their personal growth after the retreat.
Breathwork also plays an important role in helping participants reconnect with themselves before and after the retreat. Learn more in The Importance of Breathwork in Psilocybin Retreats.
More Than a Retreat
Looking back at my own journey, one thing has become very clear. The experience that changed my life wasn't created by one ceremony, one conversation or one breathwork session. It was the way everything came together.
Before I even arrived, I felt understood. During the retreat, I gradually slowed down, built trust with the people around me and found space to reconnect with myself. The time in nature, the music, the breathwork, the ceremony and the conversations that followed all played their own part.
None of these experiences stood alone. Together, they created an environment where I finally felt safe enough to stop fighting myself and start listening instead.
That experience didn't just change my life. It shaped the philosophy behind Elevated Mind Retreats.

Every Step Serves a Purpose
Today, every retreat we facilitate is built around that same principle. We don't believe transformation comes from one extraordinary moment. We believe it comes from the way every part of the journey supports the next, creating the right conditions for meaningful and lasting change.
From the first intake form to the final integration call, every conversation, every exercise and every shared experience has been intentionally placed within a journey that unfolds naturally. Nothing is included by chance, and nothing exists in isolation.
Our hope is simple: that every participant leaves not only with a meaningful experience, but with the understanding, tools and support to carry that experience into everyday life.
It's this complete journey—from the first intake form to the weeks after the retreat—that defines Elevated Mind Retreats. We don't believe lasting transformation comes from one extraordinary moment, but from a carefully designed sequence of experiences in which every step prepares you for the next.
That's why every part of our retreat has a purpose.
